Wildcats, Mustangs split doubleheader
Wayne State came away from Marshall, Minn., Tuesday with a split in NSIC softball action at Southwest Minnesota State, taking the opener 5-2 before the Mustangs claimed the nightcap, 6-3.
In the opener, Wayne State broke open a close one with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Katellyn Wobken and a two-run double by Melanie Alyea. Alyssa Schropp also had an RBI single in the big inning. Wayne State closed out the scoring in the seventh they Jalyn Zeiss brought home Sam O'Brien with a sacrifice fly.
Cassy Miller pitched six shutout innings to get the win, then came on in relief of Sarah Macias to close the game out. She was helped out by a 14-hit attack, with Wobken, Emily Chandler, Caitlin Fehringer and Lexie Loos each recording two hits.
In the nightcap, errors led to the Wildcats' undoing as Southwest scored six unearned runs on four Wayne State errors. Wayne State outhit the Mustangs 12-4 in the losing effort, with Loos going a perfect 4-for-4 and scoring two runs. Chandler and Morgan Hoeg each added two hits.
Wayne State is 15-18 overall and 10-4 in NSIC action. They are home this weekend for 12 p.m. doubleheaders against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday and Bemidji State on Sunday at the Chapman Complex.
