Jo Ann Stoltenberg
Jo Ann Stoltenberg, 85, of Wayne, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2017 at her home at Brookdale-Wayne.
Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. The Rev. Jeanne Madsen and Chaplain Deb Hammer will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Carroll.
Memorials may be made to the Stoltenberg family for later designation.
Jo Ann Stoltenberg was born June 18, 1932 in Plainview to Clarence and Ardis (McKinsey) Volwiler. She and her siblings were baptized in 1942 by Rev. Antrim of Pierce Methodist Church. She graduated from Carroll High School in 1949. Jo Ann earned her teaching certificate from State Teacher’s College in Wayne that summer and began teaching at District 37 in Cedar County in the fall of 1949. Jo Ann married Loren Stoltenberg on May 29, 1950. They celebrated their 67th anniversary this spring. Jo Ann was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Randolph. Her confirmation verse was Matthew 5:16. Jo Ann taught at one room schools in Wayne and Cedar counties. Jo Ann attended Wayne State College, earning several degrees: in 1976 she earned her BAE in Elementary Ed and Art; in 1979 MSE in Elementary Ed K-9; in 1982 MSE in Administration. She received her PHD (ABD) in Administration from Kansas State in 1984. Jo Ann taught Kindergarten and Secondary Art in Coleridge; Professor of Education at Wayne State College; Middle School Special Ed at Fort Riley, Kan.; Principal and Director of K-12 Special Ed at Plainview; K-12 Principal and Chapter 1 Special Ed Director at Lynch; Elementary Principal at St. George, Kan. In retirement, Jo Ann was a substitute teacher at Apache Junction, Ariz. She was a top salesperson for World Book Encyclopedia, member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Wayne County Retired Teachers’ Association. She loved working outdoors on the farm. Her hobbies included quilting and embroidery. She loved putting puzzles together in the winter and was always ready for a good game of cards. Jo Ann was a member at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Wayne.
Survivors include her husband, Loren; her children, Vicki (Phil) Fisher of Hastings and Garry (Nancie) Stoltenberg of Lincoln, five grandchildren, Jenny Luckner, Erica (Matt) Peterson, Ryan (Carrie) Stoltenberg, Jake (Alyson) Fisher, and Lindsay (Jamie) Hemmingsen; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Harmeier of Norfolk and Norma Lee Stoltenberg of Norfolk and three brothers: Donald (Jan) Volwiler of Carroll, Dwain (Elinor) Volwiler of Norfolk, and Alan Volwiler of Omaha; nieces and nephews.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers-in-law: Don Harmeier, Dale Stoltenberg, Dallas Stoltenberg; three sisters-in-law: Arlene Volwiler, Susan Volwiler, Sue Stoltenberg; two nephews: Tim Volwiler, Rick Harmeier; a niece: Kelly Volwiler.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jo Ann’s grandchildren, Erica Peterson, Lindsay Hemmingsen, Jenny Lauckner, Carrie Stoltenberg and Alyson Fisher and her great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Ryan Stoltenberg, Jake Fisher, Matt Peterson, Jamie Hemmingsen, Robbie Harmeier, Verlyn Stoltenberg and Todd Volwiler.
