Cornelius (Neil) W. Sandahl, was born near Wakefield on May 10, 1930 to Ernest (Dick) and Mabel (Nelson) Sandahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. He attended country school at Wayne County’s District #47 and graduated from Wakefield High in 1947. He graduated from Wayne State College in 1951 with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Industrial Arts. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and worked with the Army Security Agency during the Korean War and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. He returned home to farm with his dad and brother east of Wayne. While showing his slides from his time in Japan to neighbors, he met the love of his life – Bonita (Bonnie) Faith Sorensen – and they married at Grace Lutheran in Wayne on Aug. 25, 1957. They would have celebrated their 59th anniversary this month. After a successful farming career, Neil retired in 1995, and they enjoyed traveling, visiting family and gardening. Neil was active in his community. He served on the Wayne School Board for 16 years and as the president several years, was able to personally hand all four of his daughters their diplomas. He was a proud member of the Wayne County Rural Fire Board for forty years, serving as President from 1970-2010. He was active in Farm Bureau, Aid Association for Lutherans and Lutheran Laymen’s League. At Grace Lutheran he sang in his beautiful tenor voice in the choir; helped with crafts at Vacation Bible School; and was an Elder, Trustee, and a member of the Duo Club where they hand cranked many a gallon of delicious home-made ice cream. They were involved in a group of five families who continued to meet monthly, fondly called Supper Club for over 50 years. He received the Pioneer Farm Award, the Good Neighbor Award, worked the election polls, and was a faithful blood donor.
