Mary Jo Gross, 76, of Wayne, died Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield.
Services willl be held Wednesday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne. Fr. Jeff Mollner, Fr. Mark Beran, Fr. Don Cleary, Fr. James F. McCluskey, Deacon Gary French and Deacon Dennis Knudsen will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne with family present. A Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s School Scholarship Fund.

Mary Joan “Mary Jo” Gross was born Aug. 3, 1940 at Beatrice to Donald and Marguerite (Frazier) Doyle. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Beatrice and completed her bachelor’s degree in home economics in 1963, from Mount St. Scholastica, in Atchison, Kan. She worked as a Nebraska Extension Agent from 1963-1965. Mary Jo married Patrick Gross May 15, 1965 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beatrice. The couple lived in Wayne all of their married life. They began raising their family and in 1977, Mary Jo started working at Wayne State College in the Interlibrary Loan Department. She retired as the Assistant Registrar in 2004. Mary Jo was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and enjoyed being a part of the diaconate community following her husband’s ordination as a deacon in 2004. Being involved with the activities and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren and outings with the Wednesday Night Girls were very special to her. In the last years of her life, Mary Jo greatly appreciated the support and company of her many friends, her church, and the Wayne State College community.
Survivors include her husband, Patrick; children, Francine Gross of Alexandria, Va., Amy Gross (John Pagen) of Manhattan, Kan., Daniel Gross (Kristi) of Tekamah, Mary Patricia Gross of Lincoln and William Gross (Nicole) of Waverly; grandchildren, Erin, Matthew, and Catharine Gross, John Doyle Pagen and Marisa Gross; siblings, Kathryn Doyle of Phoenix, Ariz., Charles Doyle (Carol) of Lincoln, Jane Bromert (Dan Scott) of Sioux Falls, S.D., Patricia Doyle (Jan Shores) of St. Louis, Mo., Rita Aden of Overland Park, Kan. and Susan Smith (Pharr) of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Doris Doyle of Ave Maria, Fla.; three nephews; two nieces; many in-laws and fond friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Doyle; and nephew, Courtland Smith.
Pallbearers will be Ron Gentrup, Rusty Parker, Gary Redden, Matthew Gross, John Doyle Pagen and Mitch Sump.
