He worked as a hired hand until he joined the Nebraska Platoon and graduated from boot camp in 1951. Gordon served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. Gordon married Dorothy Annetta Carstens on April 3, 1959 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wayne. In his 30s, he received his GED through Norfolk High School. Through the years, Gordon worked in Wayne at the Texaco Station, as a mechanic at Wolske’s Garage and then as a Stationary Engineer at Energy Systems until retiring. He always tried to make it to his grandchildren’s events: soccer, concerts, and track meets. He loved being a part of their lives. He loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren, taking many family vacations, whether it be camping and canoeing at Yankton or road trips further into South Dakota, Minnesota and Colorado. Non camping vacations included Disney World and cruises to the Caribbean and others trips were made to Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Washington, DC. In March 2014, Gordon was able to take part in a Korean War Honor Flight, flying to Washington, DC with 400 other veterans sponsored by Patriotic Productions.
