Gail J. Godbersen
Gail J. Godbersen, 87, of Wayne, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
Services will be held on Friday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Millard at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. and will continue on Friday from 9 a.m. until service time at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne.
Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Gail Jestine Godbersen was born Nov. 2, 1930 at Auburn, to Clarence and Lucile (McKinney) Gilliland, and was baptized and confirmed at the First Methodist Church in Auburn. She grew up on her parents’ farm near Auburn, attending rural schools, and graduated from Auburn High School in 1948. She attended Peru State Teachers College and graduated in 1952 with a B.A. degree in Business Education. She began her teaching career in Business Education at Millard, where she met Vernon H. Godbersen and they were married at the First Methodist Church in Auburn on Aug. 1, 1954. She taught and substituted most of her life until retiring from Dodge Public School in 1994.
Previously Gail had been a Sunday School teacher and pianist, and an Extension Club President, a Treasurer for the Dodge Education Association, and a Treasurer for TOPS. Gail was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne, the National Education Association, the Retired Teachers Personnel Association in the Wayne area, the TOPS organization, and enjoyed playing cards, belonging to several card clubs. Gail and her husband farmed all their life near Millard, Oakland, and Winside. They traveled extensively, visiting every County Fairgrounds in Nebraska. After Vernon’s death in 2007, Gail retired to a townhouse in Wayne. Gail was very proud of her family and she enjoyed attending all of her grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include a daughter, Gayleen and Marvin Ernesti of Norfolk; a son, Gary and Carmen Godbersen of Wisner; daughter-in-law, Capri and Dave McGuire of Wisner; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith and Ruthie Gilliland of Omaha; sisters, Davida Swertzic of Columbus and Norma and Mike Origer of Quartzite, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Lorraine Godbersen of West Point; brother-in-law, Dean and Cathie Godbersen of Omaha; nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon Godbersen in 2007, and a son, Wayne Godbersen, in 1998.
