She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield.  She attended and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1947 and continued her education at Wayne State College.  After graduating from college she began teaching kindergarten and coaching girls basketball in Soldier, Iowa.  Elaine also taught kindergarten in Sloan, Iowa before moving back to teach kindergarten in Wakefield.  On Aug. 21, 1953 Elaine married Bob Hansen. Together the couple lived on a farm south of Wakefield and started farming together.
