Wayne married Annamae Emshoff on June 2, 1958. He served in the Army Dental Corps in Vietnam. In 1963 Wayne and Annamae moved to Wayne where he joined Dr. Gordon Shupe in dental practice. It was through his dental career that Wayne made a significant impact to the improvement of dental health through education and by providing amazing care and practicing preventative dentistry.  He was a member of countless dental health committees, was Chairman of the successful water fluoridation campaign in Wayne, leading to improved dental health in the community, served as President of the Nebraska Dental Association and was inducted into both the Nebraska Dental Association Hall of Fame and the International Hall of Fame of Dentists.  Wayne retired from dentistry in 2005 after 40+ years of private practice. His 1961 UNL dental class remained lifelong friends for now 55+ years. Wayne so valued the lasting and meaningful relationships he developed with his patients throughout northeast Nebraska.
Wayne embraced his love for his hometown by serving on several local board of directors. In 1974 he served as the President of the Wayne Chamber of Commerce.  Wayne was awarded the Citizen of the Year by the Wayne Chamber of Commerce in 1990. He was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Wayne was a true outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting with his son, grandchildren and friends. He played on the rec basketball league, rode on two Bike Rides Across Nebraska (BRAN), enjoyed playing golf and watching the Huskers. He was passionate about fitness which contributed to his strength and ability to battle and persevere against Parkinson’s. The most blessed of those that knew Wayne were his four children. They received never ending love, support, encouragement and the best childhood anyone could ask for. His kids remember him as a loving, caring, interested, gentle, patient, logical and funny dad who encouraged them every step of the way.
