Dr. Maria Ruiz Grovas
Dr. Maria Ruiz Grovas, 96, formerly of Wayne, died in her home on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10 at All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege.
Maria was born in Cuba. She met the love of her life, Alfredo (Freddy) Grovas Toledo, while studying at the University of Havana. They were married in December 1940 and settled and began a family in Matanzas, Cuba. In the early 1960s, Maria and Freddy emigrated their family to the United States. They eventually settled in Holdrege, where she taught Spanish at the Holdrege Public Schools. Following Freddy’s passing in November 1968, Maria and her son Alfred moved to Wayne, where she taught at Wayne State College until her retirement in 1987. In 1990 she moved to Miami, where she lived for 27 years surrounded by her extended family and friends and the last few years also her daughter, Sary. May the grace and strength that she exhibited throughout her long, beautiful life be with us always.
Survivors include her son Alfred; daughters, Amy Elliott, Sara Collinson and Marie Gambon; daughter-in-law Lesa; son-in-law, Kenneth Gambon; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, in honor of her son, Alfred.
